Updated PHP features feature image

PHP is the backbone of WordPress sites. Every time you visit a WordPress page, PHP is working behind the scenes to make it all happen. So upgrading to a new PHP version, like the recently released PHP v8.4 can bring significant benefits to your websites.

But how do you ensure that upgrading to a new PHP version does not disrupt your site?

You create a staging site and test the upgrade on it. This ensures your main site stays perfect and uninterrupted while you make your changes.

Revamped staging process with PHP v8.4

Great news!! You can now use the latest PHP 8.4 on staging sites.

PHP 8.4 is faster and addresses bugs from previous versions so your site runs better. This makes your testing environment more like the real deal. New features, like an updated API, make managing your site’s functionality easier.

Check how your existing site setup works on PHP v8.4. Try out different PHP versions on all your staging sites. It’s all your playground!

What’s new in PHP v8.4?

PHP v8.4 comes with significant new additions. Here’s a look at some of them:

  • Property hooks to define the behavior when accessing class properties. Now your code will take less effort and time to create and run.
  • Asymmetric visibility for class properties based on the read or write context. Call in a class without worrying too much about their visibility.
  • New array functions to find elements within arrays. Now avoid junk values in your data input fields and keep them clean.
  • new invocations do not need parentheses anymore. No more scratching your heads and figuring out syntax errors caused by a missing symbol.
  • Support for the newer AEGIS-128L and AEGIS256 encryption algorithms. Build websites with even more security baked in right from the inception.

Apart from these, the update brings more support for HTML5 and lazy objects, changes to its JIT interpreter, conversion of exit() and die() into functions, and much more.

Increased server resources for new builds

Whether you use page builders or craft sites from scratch, the best way is to build it on a staging site first.

However, page builders like Elementor require more resources for new builds as compared to updates.

So we increased the default max_input_vars to 20,000. This applies to all PHP versions that you can select when creating a staging site.

Create complex designs and layouts with confidence. Your staging site can handle it!
